Tuning the properties of NanoCarbon with Fluorination

Final Report Summary - NANOCF (Tuning the properties of NanoCarbon with Fluorination)

The network NanoCF is designed to exploit the potential of fluorinated nanocarbon materials for applications in electronics, photonics, or biomedicine. A multidisciplinary approach will be applied ranging from fundamental research in chemistry and physics to studying the materials properties for technological innovation. The work is based on preparation, modification and characterization of the carbon nanotubes, graphene and few-layered graphite. This work is supplemented by very successful theoretical modelling.
Methods for the restoration of a conducting layer on fluorinated graphite have been explored. Electronic properties have been studied using NEXAFS and direct electric measurements. From the NEXAFS measurements in conjunction with DFT calculations fluorination patterns have been proposed. Fluorination patterns resulting from different pathways of fluorination have been investigated.
A surprising difference in the thin film behavior of fluorinated few-layer graphene and double-walled carbon nanotubes was found, where none of the thin film devices showed a characteristic field-effect.
Various possibilities to generate sensors from the above mentioned materials have been investigated. Proof of principle has been shown for sensing NO2 and NH3.
