Owing to the implementation of the project, it was possible to define the key directions and research needs in the field of CCS technology. The main objectives of the project, i.e. (1) transfer of knowledge and experience in the area of innovation CO2 capture technology, (2) to strengthening the research partnerships through staff exchange and networking activities between Partners both from Europe, Asia and America, (3) to establishing long-term cooperation through a coordinated joint programme by exchange of researchers have been attained.

Summary of the project objectives, work performed and main results achieved:
The main objectives of the projects, i.e. to develop a high-efficiency adsorption technology based on advanced CO2 sorbents, development of novel oxygen carrier materials for CLC technologies and novel CaO based sorbents for Ca-looping cycle and development of the overall plant concept for the reliable, safe and economical carbon capture with coal oxy-combustion technology have been attained. In the framework of WP1 (advanced sorbents), activities have been carried out in order to identify the best sorbents for experimental testing in adsorption VPSA systems for CO2 capture from combustion gas. As the result of jointly conducted activities (CUT, HWU, ZJU) solid CO2 adsorbents of a new type have been developed (Li-based adsorbents from fly ash, carbon based adsorbents, MOFs, activated carbon, zeolites) the complete characterization of their physicochemical properties has been made, and their CO2 sorption potential has been assessed using thermogravimetric methods, among others. The obtained results has made it possible to recommend the best adsorbents for investigation within WP2. In the framework of WP2 (Adsorption engineering) experimental tests were performed in a laboratory-scale PSA unit, TGA Vacuum, high pressure thermogravimetric system and bench scale installation VPSA. The MOFs, Li-FA sorbents, zeolite and activated carbon were selected for the tests. The results of jointly conducted activities lead to the following conclusions: the purity of carbon dioxide in the product as well as recovery rate in the case of activated carbon and zeolite strongly depended on evacuation pressure and duration of the adsorption step, longer time of the adsorption step increased purity while decreasing recovery. In summary, for the VPSA adsorption technology be able to be competitive to the liquid amine method, it must rely on an effective adsorbent with high sorption capacity with respect to CO2.
Within WP3 (Chemical looping) development and characterization of the novel oxygen carrier materials before and after the CLC run in CLC installation has been done based on the long experience of the partners (ICHPW and UU) and the exchange of the results. Within WP3 analysis of the morphology of OCs by SEM, analysis of the reactivity of the developed oxygen carriers by TGA and their suitability for the CLC and CLOU processes and analysis of the reactivity of the developed OCs in a fluidized bed reactor has been done. Within WP3 development and presentation of the results obtained from a Ca Looping Cycle installation (NU) has been done. In the framework of WP4 (oxy-fuel combustion), the results obtained from plants of different sizes were exchanged in order to recognize the effect of scale-up on combustion and emission behaviour. Joint work (CUT, UU, TUHH, NU, ICHPW, ZJU) was conducted on the development of a high-efficiency oxy-combustion design for PC, CFB and PCFB boilers and on the development of the overall plant concept for the reliable, safe and economical carbon capture with coal oxy-combustion technology. Summary, the oxy-fuel combustion is a mature technology ready to demonstration in a large scale, which can be considered for the retrofit of older boilers as well. The crucial benefit of oxy-fuel performance is a highly concentrated stream of CO2, which leaves combustion chamber directly. The main disadvantages are the separation of air in large quantities and the treatment of contaminated flue gas prior to the transport and storage of recovered CO2. The overall objective of this WP was also to describe an oxy-fuel combustion technology with CCS installation, including the major additional components for oxygen-firing power plant concept.
Summary of project results:
▪ The expected results in a particular area such as carbon capture were achieved; The scientific and research potential developed under project may contribute to the development of the CCS technology;
▪ The international cooperation was reinforced though, inter alia: (1) joint research on CCS (2) joint seminars, workshops, summer schools and conference, (3) staff exchange, etc. 28 experienced researchers and 10 PhD students from UE as well as other third countries took part in the project. During project realization, the results obtained from the conducted work were presented at national and international conferences. Therefore, an important part of project results was a successful organization of international conference entitled “Advanced CO2 Capture Technologies for Clean Coal Energy Generation”, as well as 3 summer schools and several workshops (5), seminars and Partners' meetings (5). As a result papers in peer reviewed journals were published, chapters in regular monographs, conference proceedings monographs also oral and poster presentations during international conferences, presentations during organized summer school were given. During project realization the monograph Advanced CO2 Capture Technologies for Clean Coal Energy Generation was published. The monograph is a collection of research results which have been gained by the authors of following chapters during the program as well as exchange experiences among partners cooperated in the CO2TRIP project.
▪ The project provided support to the universities and research institutes to establish long-term research cooperation through a coordinated joint programme by exchange of researchers; The project enabled close cooperation with previously well-known university partners and also enabled new research contacts;
▪ The cooperation conducted under the project has enabled the transfer of knowledge due to the huge partners experience in the field of the CCS technology; The project has popularized the knowledge of CCS technologies;
▪ The activities were designed to exploit complementary expertise of the participants and to create synergies between them; As a result of international collaboration additional benefit was generation of a basis for future cooperation within both national and international project calls;
▪ The completed research exchanges enabled numerous scientific contacts to be entered into, as well as the tightening of collaboration and exchange of experiences.
The results obtained from the implementation of the project and the acquired knowledge will be used to:
▪ identify the strategic direction and research needs in the CCS technology;
▪ promote the CCS technology and increase the social acceptance of the CCS technology as climate policy instruments for improving the quality of life;
▪ transfer the CO2 capture technologies to a greater scale, both in the energy and industrial sectors, owing to the obtained results concerning, e.g. energy demand for the process;
▪ publish scientific papers based on the obtained research results;

Summarizing, transfer of knowledge and increasing of experience in the area of CO2 capture technology as main goal of the project was achieved. The Project was advertised on the Project's website http:www.fluid.is.pcz.pl/~co2trip/ and during numerous research trips made by the Project's participants.
