Obiettivo
The aim of the MIHFAD project is to develop some of the key technologies required for the development of high-density, high-performance miniature disk-drives. Miniature magnetic heads represent one of the key components that will shape the overall properties of the final disc drive.
A magnetic material with high saturation magnetization has been selected, with appropriate characteristics for use in the development of high density, high performance miniature disk drives. A pico slider in the format 35% has been designed and has proven to exhibit good flying characteristics with a suspension which has been specifically adapted. Tests have been performed with prototypes of magnetic heads and performances which are close to the desired storage densities have been achieved.
There is a continuing trend towards the miniaturisation of disk drives, as evidenced by the successive development of 5.25 3.5 2.5 and now 1.8 inch diameter devices. MIHFAD's target storage density of 400 Mbits per square inch is will enable the demonstration of 2.5 and 1.8inch" diameter drives with capacities of 320 Mbytes and 160 Mbytes respectively (two times those available in 1993).
In order to achieve such characteristics, the key technologies that need to be mastered are related to:
- improvement in the magnetic materials and circuits of the heads in order to write on the recording media with a higher coercivity
- lower and constant head flying heights and the reduction of slider size
- improvement in disk media involving substrate, magnetic layer and head/disk interaction.
