Objectif Environmental pollution has progressively increased, becoming today a real danger for nature and particularly humankind. Nanoporous solids, in particular Metal–Organic Framework (MOFs), have shown to be materials with large capacities and high potentials for environmental remediation. In this regard, the outperforming adsorptive and catalytic properties of MOFs can be exploited in a synergetic way to capture and degrade highly harmful substances. The overall objective of dustbinMOF project is to develop microporous Hybrid Zeolitic Azolate Frameworks and mesoporous azolate based MOFs (i.e. MIL-101 network type) specially tailored for the removal and eventually the catalytic degradation of very harmful contaminants. The initial part of the project comprises atomistic design of the two families of MOFs. In the second stage the new ligand synthesis and functionalization will be done, followed by the synthesis of the targeted MOFs. The characterization of the prepared ligands and MOFs will encompass X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, spectroscopic methods and pore and surface area analysis. The third stage will be focused on the adsorption of selected pollutants (NOx, SOx, H2S, HCN, VOCs, CS2, COS and chemical warfare model compounds), as a needed primary step of the environmental remediation process. The final stage will comprises the catalytic degradation capabilities of the MOFs towards the conversion of the selected pollutants into harmless substances, with the corresponding impact on environmental remediation. This project will conduct to the development of a rational design approach of MOFs for environmental remediation, making available two public libraries of new hypothetical MOFs. As an important result of dustbinMOF will be output a number of new MOFs with suitable capabilities for capturing and degrading harmful contaminants towards a healthier environment.
