Establishing Precision and Controlling Uncertainties for Multijet Simulations at the LHC

Ziel

As the Large Hadron Collider probes nature with unprecedented energies
and luminosity it is vital to have accurate simulations which can be
compared directly with data. This involves incorporating exact
calculations at a fixed order in the perturbative expansion with the
approximate calculations normally used in simulations of high energy
collisions.

The PECULIJETS project will develop such simulations by concentrating
on the accurate simulation of processes involving photons. These
processes are important both in their own right and as the backgrounds
to both the production of the Higgs boson and the search for new
physics beyond the Standard Model. They are an essential component as
we strive for more and more accurate simulations, occurring at
approximately the same rate as the second order corrections in the
strong coupling and forming a vital part of the full higher order
electroweak corrections.

The project will achieve this through: the development of state of the
art simulations of the production of a photon in association with one
or two jets at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling
constant (WP1); matching in the case that there are both
electromagnetic and strong corrections, for example dijet production
(WP2); improving multijet merging techniques using the high energy
jets formalism, with particular emphasis on assessing the
uncertainties involved in such approaches (WP3); incorporating both
electromagnetic and strong radiation in multijet merging. All of
these objectives build upon each other and will lead to a
state-of-the-art simulation of processes involving both
electromagnetic and strong corrections. The new simulations will be
incorporated with the Herwig++ simulation package so that they can
easily be used by the LHC experiments in their analyses and to compare
our theoretical predictions and the latest experimental results.
