Project goal of project LeanShips was to develop and demonstrate green technologies, building upon research work carried out in previous projects, a.o. in the former EU Framework Programmes. The idea behind this was that the missing link between green technology availability and large scale market uptake is: “Hard” evidence on green technology reliability, impact on energy use and on emissions, and the economic gains to compensate for the necessary investments.
The project setup was such that we had 7 “autonomous and independent” demo cases, where teams of mainly industrial partners, each with an end-user, i.e. ship operator in the team, would demonstrate green innovative technologies.

Handling of daily project management activities with Partners till the end of the Project
Distribution of the 2nd Interim Payment from the EC to the Project Partners
Communication with the European Commission to inform on the change requests from Partners and finalisation of the 3rd Amendment

WP 04
2 Tugs of type RSD2513 with Innovative TwinFin© delivered and in commercial use, third one to be delivered this week (week 26, 2019) and 4 more sold and to be delivered in 2019. 4 more are under construction and can be delivered as soon as 2020.
On July 19, 2018, Damen shows the RSD Tug 2513 to the European Commission during a visit in Rotterdam.
RSD tug is present during LeanShips final conference for all attendees to visit
WP 05
Commissioning of the engine with installation of all sensors for Bench tests
Execution of the Bench tests to determine the test area, acquire data for data processing in Matlab for efficiency and emission results
Increase in Maximum efficiency of around 12%, of energy fraction with methanol by 70%, reduction of NO asnd PM by around 60% and 77% respectively
Submission of the Paper “Efficiency and emissions of a high speed marine diesel engine converted to dual-fuel operation with methanol” at CIMAC
Submission of proposals for follow-up Projects with VLAIO, Belgian Energy Transition Fund and H2020.
WP 07
Validation campaign of the “Assessment Tool” to ensure a match with expectations;
The tool was expanded to also compare the environmental impact based on CO2.Feasibility study on using Methanol as alternative fuel for General Cargo Ships was completed, including the inclusion of methanol as a fuel in the assessment tool
Discussions on Concept design along with Rules and safety regulations, so as to store Methanol as fuel in General Cargo ships;
Evaluation of the operational performance of the installed scrubbers was performed
WP 08
Structural design of the Pre-swirl stator including drawings for construction.
Construction of the Pre-swirl stator at Wartsila Spain;
Installation of the Pre-swirl stator on the Grimaldi Vessel “Grande Portogallo” in a dedicated vessel docking.
Speed trials on the “Grande Portogallo” before and after the installation to prove the effectiveness of the device
WP 09
Execution of Model testing for demonstration of the Sea-keeping abilities
Execution of Model testing for optimisation of the rudder performance along with Large Diameter Combination

WP 10
Finalisation of catalogue of solutions for the Integrated Efficiency approach
Finalisation of the analysis on the impact of the energy efficiency due the reconfiguration of space layouts and structural configurations to achieve optimal trade-off between weight, performances and payload.
Finalisation of the development of the DSS software modules – - Graphical User Interface, Propulsion, hydrodynamics, Electrical models, Weather data, Energetic, thermal & emissions model, Trim optimization model
Installation on-board (Tallink Victoria I, Ro-Pax ferry) of instruments, sensors (inclinometer, vibration sensors, etc.) and software tools
Performance of to test sessions of the prototype during several regular ferry operations to validate models and to improve and consolidate the software performance.
WP 11
HTO – Installation of the HTO Demonstrator and tests in real scale. Final validation of the performaces.
COW –The system has been build and assembled land-based. Several tests have been carried out various conditions and performances have been validated.
ORC – During this reporting period, further work was conducted on the organic fluid to be used for the ORC.
ESS –. The ESS desing was finalised and demonstrator was manufactured. Validation tests were performed, showing that heat transfer can be performed fast enough for the foreseen application with 82% efficiency.
SER – The particulate filter demonstrator was built and the software for the process control was written. Tests followed in the last project months. The filter was presented at SMM 2019 and first offers for full size applications were issued.
WP 04: The RSD Tug 2513 is a success, 7 were built and all are sold.
WP 05: An energy savings of 12% and emission savings of 14%, 60%, 70% and 77% for respectively CO2, NOx, SOx and PM.
WP 07: By participating in the LeanShips project, Wagenborg was able to establish a profound basis for evaluating various alternative fuels and technologies compared to low sulphur MGO. Wagenborg installed scrubbers on the B-borg vessels.
WP 08: ESD installed on board of M/V Grande Portogallo GRIM obtained a reduction of fuel consumption around 3-5%. If the results will be confirmed during next months GRIM will decide to install the ESD on board of all other sister ships (around 10 units).
WP 09: The results showed the improvements significantly better than anticipated, hence the impact of the findings from the innovation would most probably generate an impact to the shipping industry, specifically to the general cargo shipping.
WP 10: As calculated in the LCPA activities and reported in D3.22 we estimated that, fuel consumption and in CO2 and CH4 emission reduction of 7%, NOx, SOx and PM emissions reduction of 14%.
WP 11: HTO and COW technology provides a real alternative to conventional incineration. ORC impacts as described in the DoA are still relevant. ESS is Heat storage is based on PCM, to store energy under phase change latent heat. SER - . The value of 99% PM abatement is valid only if particulate matter is specified as black carbon (Bond et al.) as proposed by IMO.
