Efficient, reliable and safe people transport is essential to the continued economic development and social integration of the EU. However, public transportation is facing numerous challenges with a demand being expected to grow a 51% by 2050 and an infrastructure reaching its performance limits. Thus, a ‘smarter urban transport’ with more efficient use of the existing transport infrastructure is required, as collected in the European 2020 flagship a ‘resource efficient Europe’.
Most cities in the world are implementing AFCs aiming to improve operating efficiency and attraction of consumers. However, this data must be 'turned into intelligence' in order to achieve an optimized network. Information regarding capacity utilization, loading on different routes, punctuality, passengers volumes at stops, travel patterns of different groups of users and Origin-Destination matrices related to every journey should be extracted from mining transport data. Unfortunately, these analyses are only feasible when the destination of the users is known not being the case in electronic check-in systems.
