This POC grant was focused on translating a new medical device for interventional cardiology from a proven laboratory prototype to a commercial prototype. The core innovation is a new type of clinical ultrasound imaging probe that can be readily integrated into medical devices to guide minimally invasive procedures. Current generation ultrasound probes, which are based on electrical methods of ultrasound generation, involve complex fabrication processes which make them prohibitively expensive for many applications. The new probes that we are developing are fabricated from inexpensive optical fibres originally developed for the telecommunications industry. They can be readily integrated into small diameter needles and catheters, which make them attractive for a wide range of clinical applications. The commercial prototype delivered as part of this ERC POC grant has strong potential to provide innovative ultrasound image guidance capabilities at costs that are an order of magnitude lower than those of current-generation devices. Clinical and commercial discussions have indicated that this outcome would open up multiple clinical applications that are currently under-served due to reimbursement limitations, and thereby provide the foundation for downstream commercialisation via the creation of a spinout company or licensing. This ERC POC grant was invaluable for translating the optical ultrasound sensors into clinical practice, as bridged the gap between a proven laboratory technology and a commercial product.
