Open Standard for Multimedia Optical Storage Environments

Obiettivo

To stimulate the multimedia CD title business by offering a multi-platform publishing solution.

The publishing of information, entertainment, and learning material will be largely based on interactive multimedia CDs in the 1990s. The development of this business is hampered by the diversity of play-back platforms available, and by the continuous changes in the computer world.

The OSMOSE project is developing a Common Publishing format (CPF) allowing publishers to develop multimedia CD titles that can be placed on multiple platforms, such as CD-I and CD-ROM XA. This will offer a large market for a single CD title and enable portability of CD's between the office (computer) environment and the home (CD-I) player.

The OSMOSE work includes integration of (modem) communication functions in the format and realisation of instances of CPF runtime engines and authoring tools for a number of platforms.
