Database and models for soil type specific trafficability

Based on existing models and experiments, models that predict rutting and compaction during typical forest operations will be defined. These models will take into account in one hand soil bearing capacity and hydraulic transfer properties (previous deliverable) and in other hand the stress distribution at the tyre/track-soil interface. Finally, long term effects of forest traffic on soil functioning will be assessed: the resilience of soil to compaction, or conversely, the persistence of soil compaction, and their consequences on soil functions (including hydraulic transfer functions). Results will serve as a correction factor in the parametrization of the hydrological model.

Database and models for soil bearing capacity and hydraulic transfer properties

Understanding of ground moisture behaviour in various circumstances is a key variable affecting soil bearing capacity and trafficability. 1st task aims to develop or to modify existing soil type specific hydrological model. In relation, models will be developed for estimation of mechanical properties of forest soils from soil texture, soil moisture status, and forest stand, which are applicable both in boreal and temperate regions. These 2 models will be based on a database collecting sampling and measurements carried out at different locations within the project.
