There is increasing usage of continuous construction for multispan bridges because of the reduction in maintenance requirements and improved riding quality that arises from the elimination of joints and internal supports. The ensuing hogging moment regions at every internal support are the most critical parts of a continuous composite bridge. This proposal is for a combined experimental and theoretical study that should give a sound understanding of the behaviour of these portions of continuous composite bridges. This understanding could then be used to formulate new European and national design rules significantly improving the economy of this form of constuction.
