Influence of different surface conditions on fracture mechanics parameters

Obiettivo

The reliability of fracture mechanics safety analyses depends on exact values of material properties (e.g. K, J, COD), the location and size of defects, and the loading and deformation of the structure. Numerical methods are available for the linear-elastic, the elastic-plastic, and the fully plastic regime. Since it has been proved in practice that it is not always possible to determine these parameters with the necessary accuracy, instable crack growth can occur. Therefore, for components with high safety requirements, the crack arrest behaviour of the material and the structure has to be included in a safety analysis (material property, crack arrest toughness KIa). The purpose of the planned investigations is to quantify the influence of different types of microstructures and various grain sizes on fracture mechanics properties of vessel steels, steels for cryogenic applications and thermo-mechanically rolled steels. A variation in test temperature and in material toughness is included in the text matrix. It is expected that these investigations facilitate the use of high strength steels with a high yield strength - tensile strength ratio at the same or even enhanced safety and reliability of the components. A possible reduction in the wall thickness and the increase in the inherent safety would have enormous economical advantages.
