Within this research project, changes in the microstructure while passing the blast furnace will be measured by means of a new microscopic measuring technique to detect quantitatively the anisotropic effects of carbon phases in the coke. Tuyere coke samples and material from a pilot blast furnace from different furnace levels will be examined in comparison to the examination of the charged coke These investigations will be complemented by semi technical and lab-scale studies to measure the influence of different parameters on the coke microstructure. A further aim of this project is to investigate the behaviour of nut coke (20-40 mm) in comparison to lumpy coke during its descent in the blast furnace and to study its effect on blast furnace operation. To meet this aim, nut coke with additions (ZrO2) will be produced in the coking plant and charged into the blast furnace in different ways. In order to study its behaviour in the blast furnace, coke samples will be taken by the mobile tuyere probe and examined physically (e.g. microstructure) and chemically for traced and non- traced coke.
