Obiettivo Hard-surfacing technology is adopted for the production of components specifically designed to be of the composite type with surfaces having the desired characteristics, as an alternative to other surface treatments and to obviate the need to utilize large quantities of costly materials for the whole component. A particularly promising process from this stand-point is that based on the Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) technique, which is alone in yielding very thin hard surfacings without giving rise to any dilution problem. The aim of the project is to make a systematic check on the mechanical, tribological and metallurgical properties of surfacings obtained with various combinations of filler materials and surfacing parameters, for several classes of surfacing materials. The advantages of post-surfacing heat treatments will be investigated in the most promising cases. Then, in the final phase of the project and on the basis of the laboratory findings, prototypes of two typical steels components will be manufactured and their in-service behaviour and performance will be checked.
