System for Planning and Managing Radio Frequencies

Obiettivo

The purpose of the PSPGF project is to develop a powerful radio frequency planning tool for a wide range of applications. Special emphasis will be given to zonal services of the second and third generation, namely digital broadcasting and digital cellular mobile services with microcell coverage. The aim is to help optimise the use of the spectrum for terrestrial radio communications.

The project aims to develop improved algorithms for predicting the propagation of radio waves, based on the modern geometric theory of diffraction (GTD) and the use of digital terrain charts. To this end, the consortium will develop the 3-D GTD model and the algorithms associated with its application to the urban environment, represented by models generated from digital maps. The previous algorithms will be useful for characterising the urban radio wideband channel and for developing its dispersive model on the basis of reflection, diffraction and scattering.

The extension to 3-D modelling will be very suitable for particularly difficult environments (such as mountain regions and cities), and is specially adapted for designing and planning new digital-zone wideband systems. The work as a whole will allow the planning of more reliable zonal radio systems to be refined, reducing implementation costs and saving frequencies while facilitating the production of designs that are better adjusted to operational needs.
