Obiettivo
Nitrogen purging is now widely practised in the European Community as a means of fighting open and deep-seated fires in mines. The atmosphere near the fire may be flammable as a result of the mixture of methane with the products of pyrolysis or combustion and there is a risk of a gas or coal-dust explosion as long as the air reaching the seat of the fire is not sufficiently inerted.
