Improvement of destressing shotfiring to reduce known rockburst hazards

Obiettivo

Increasing mining depth and concentration of coal faces are leading to a rise in rock stresses. Under certain geological and geometrical conditions these can lead to rockbursts. Rockburst hazards thus remain a major problem in hard coal mining.

The only stress-relieving method approved so far - stress-relief drilling - is fraught with considerable technical drawbacks:

- it is difficult to integrate into mining operations, particularly in faces with high stresses and in thin seams.

- the time and effort is considerable, both for transport and setup of the drilling unit and for drilling itself.

- an uneven loss of strength in the solid face can lead to deteriorations in the roof.

- fine drill cuttings increase the fire hazard from spontaneous combustion.

These drawbacks do not arise to the same extent in shot-firing and this method is thus to be developed in this project to ensure that stress can be relieved in safety.

The project is to comprise the following work packages.

Work package 1: Drawing up a measurement programme

Work package 2: Destressing shot-firing with measurement of the results

Work package 3: Analysis and improvement of the method

Work package 4: Preparing operating instructions.
