Semi robotisation of the plate finishing process, improvement in environmental conditions and reducing of exposure to risk

Exploitable results

The main activities were as follows: analysis of working conditions and identification of harmful and dangerous factors; detailed environmental survey and drawing up of a risk chart; identification of the primary and secondary sources of noise; installation of automatic marking systems on a trial basis; tests on soundproofing systems for the main sources of noise; design and development of an automatic system for detecting, measuring and recording defects on the plates; study to asses the possibilities of soundproofing specific stretches of the roller table; analysis of the new working conditions and drawing up of a new noise chart; general evaluation of results. Approximately 90% noise reduction in areas with very high noise levels and approximately 50% noise reduction in areas with high noise levels were attained. Implementation of automatic marking systems meant that personnel no longer had to work on the finishing lines, where they were exposed to harmful ambient conditions and risks due to the movement of the plates. An automatic system for detecting, measuring and recording defects on the plates was designed and developed and this system is being incorporated into the production process so that plate inspection, a job involving a high degree of risk for workers, will no longer require the presence of personnel. The results have shown that it is possible to reduce the noise created by the different plate conveyor systems in the finishing shop. The main soundproofing measures introduced are completely innovatory for this type of production process. Exposure to risk can be reduced considerably by installing automatic marking systems. (the electronic equipment needs to be checked and/or modified) and can be further reduced or eliminated by using automatic systems to check for defects on the plates. Laboratory tests have proved satisfactory. The system uses electromagnetic resonance waves, linked to a data processor, to map out the defects on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate.
