Rationalization of the procedure used in fire tests

Obiettivo

The main target of this research work is focussing on the harmonisation of various fire full-scale tests procedures carried out to qualify longiform materials for use underground. The 'pass' criteria is to be linked with the material eventual contribution to the fire propagation in the galleries.

This harmonisation work needs to be done due to the arrival of the European market, where in the field there is not yet any largely admitted standard to be applied. However, very few experienced procedures can be proposed or modified inside the EC, since few installations are available as possible qualification sites with in all cases some typical constraints and characteristics to be taken into account.

The design of parallel procedures showing large similarities (as regard testing procedures, samples configuration and set-up...) but chosen as the most adequate owing to local compatibilities have been proved to be promising and at least more satisfactory than for previous attempts.

This first statement is based on the experimental phase of the job which involved four main classes of materials used underground (power cables, signal cables, air pipes and hoses for hydraulic fluids).
Detailed comparisons are reported as regards the fire behaviour of material samples as obtained in the different testing configurations in the three installations belonging to the partners of the research.
