Reduction of the risks of ground instability due to blasting at opencast coal mines

Obiettivo

Blasting operations in opencast workings inevitably cause nuisances which can prove detrimental to the safety of workers and the immediate environment. The problems include fumes, noise, flyrock, vibration and excessive crumbling of ultimate walls and active benches, which can affect stability and cause falls of ground. Improvements to blasting methods may help to limit these nuisances and hazards.

The problems are of particular importance in French workings where ratios of material cut to tonne of coal produced are on the high side (more than 10:1), and a large amount of blasting is involved. The angle of benches and slopes and their stability against crumbling are therefore of major importance.

The primary aim is to carry out a literature search to identify the main parameters affecting the degree of hazards caused by blasting, followed by an assessment of how new blasting methods (sequential blasting, choked blasting, use of bulk explosives, etc) can limit hazards in quarries and opencast coal mines.
