Wireless data transmission is a very important topic for all of our lives. We all are using smartphones or laptops and are connected to a wifi- or 4G-infrastructure. These devices and the infrastructure consume a lot of energy. All global mobile base stations consume the amount of energy produced by 25 nuclear power plants. With rising data throughputs, this amount will dramatically increase over the upcoming years.
Innsystec has developed a novel wireless data transmission technology that can be applied to any type of wireless signal and any type of device. In a first step, Innsystec will apply its technology to antenna array base stations for 4G/5G.
During the Horizon 2020 – phase 1 project, Innsystec presented the technology and prototypes to various potential partners and customers in various markets. Based on these meetings, Innsystec identified the right market for the market entry and defined its business plan.

During the project phase, new type of test equipment was identified and used in order to measure the performance of the hybrid demonstrator. The results were much better in terms of signal quality and efficiency, which lead Innsystec to refocus its future development and business activities. Additionally, the integrated (chip) version was also tested extensively during the project phase. Due to the refocus, this version will not be of importance on short term.
Interaction with industry players:
Innsystec had intensive talks, joint-measurements and presentations with leading industry players from various markets. These industry players saw great potential in the technology and are eager to continue the talks and demonstrations. Three LoIs for future collaborations could be collected.
These results will give Innsystec great potential to exploit the technology in a product in the near future.
Additionally, a great foundation with investors in the company could be set.

Current technologies that are used in 4G will face serious challenges when it comes to the 5G era. In the future, transmission energy of base stations is spread across up to 256 transmit chains. Each antenna chain has only little output power of less than 1W. For this output power, the so called methodology DPD to reach good signal quality is not applicable. Therefore, novel technologies are necessary. Innsystec has developed technology that does not need DPD and can still reach good signal quality. Innsystec technology may become an enabler for 5G data transmission.
