GaN in One Module Integrated Converter for EP systems

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - GaNOMIC (GaN in One Module Integrated Converter for EP systems)

Berichtszeitraum: 2018-03-01 bis 2021-09-30

GaNOMIC is the acronym for “GaN in One Module Integrated Converter for electrical propulsion systems”
The purpose of this disruptive project is to develop an innovative PPU anode module converter able to drastically reduce cost, weight and volume of EP systems.
GaNOMIC focuses on a power converter beyond the state of the art, with the following results :
- Only one converter (instead of two usually) for both operating points : Earth Orbit Raising and Station Keeping.
- High efficiency : over 96% and up to 98%.
- Mastering of digital control, embedded components technologies and planar transformer
- these innovations allow to reach a power density over 4kW/kg and reducing costs at PPU level by a factor of 2 regarding state of the art.
The project ended with a successfull coupling test with a EP thruster.

Next step (in a future project) would be to develop PPU Building blocks up to 7 kW and to manufacture in this frame a full embedded demonstrator to perform power tests in open and closed loop. A full converter on one board (including planar transformer) could achieve a power density up to 6 kW/kg

This technology open opportunity for new aeronautics innovating high performance power converter.
The work performed from the beginning of the project was distributed in 7 work packages :
- WP1 Consortium management :
Management of the partners, organisation of the technical meeting, periodic reportings, milestones and deliverables redaction
- WP2 Requirement, plans, exploitation and dissemination :
Build and update the website of the project,
to establish and update the longterm technology roadmap,
to establish the specification of the two artworks and to plan of the validation of the different part of the converter.
This workpackage include also all the work to demonstrate how GaNOMIC innovation allows to reduce drastically the costs at PPU level.
- WP3 Power converter design and validation :
The activities in this work package was, through an iterative process to master the Dual Active Bridge converter : to study, simulate, design, fabricate, test and correlate with simulation and optimize.
These steps were performed for each major part of the converter primary and secondary bridge, and transformer.
6 steps of optimization were performed for the converter, including 3 runs of transformer.
This WP3 includes also tests on reliability of GaN components : 1000 hours of switching at high temperature were performed without any failure.
- WP4 Digital command and integration :
The work performed was first design the processing architecture, then develop and tests the algorithms in HiL and finally with the converter developed in WP3.
- WP5 3D embedded structure and packaging
Work performed in this workpackage was dedicated on embedding components and packaging through 4 majors tasks : To develop and improve the Sintering Lamination process necessary for the transformer designing, to develop and test the embedding of pre-packaged components, to design, fabricate and test the embedding of bare dies, and to design, fabricate and test a ‘power module demonstrator’.
- WP6 Coupling tests
This workpackage performed a coupling tests of the Anode Module Converter designed in GaNOMIC with a EP Thruster (PPS-DualMode developed in H2020-CHEOPS project).
All major operating points were reached and exceeded, so all objectives of this coupling phase were reached.
As a disruptive project, GaNOMIC was not planned to deliver directly a product but technologies maturity able to prepare future building blocks for new generation PPU.
At the end of the project, technologies maturity level open the way to new added building blocks as expected.

The impact of this project will be to give the consortium industry the capacity to develop disruptive and economic PPU and versatile EPS (medium to high power class), allowing to reach a European worldwide leadership in EPS and offer to European spaceprimes and agencies improved performances and cost reduction for their space missions.

This technology open although opportunities for new aeronautics innovating high performance power converter.
