Periodic Reporting for period 1 - WILDTHING (Crowdsourcing for the control of Invasive Alien Flora Species)

WILDTHING is a citizen collaboration-based multiplatform application for the control of Invasive Alien Species: flora, fauna, micro organisms, fungi and also in the marine environment. Provided these species populations are dynamic entities, WILDTHING is designed for the creation and maintenance in real time of a global vision of the spatial distribution of Invasive Alien Species. Following the Regulation 1143/2014 recommendations, WILDTHING allows citizen participation, since they are, along with civil servants, the actors in the field for the detection and reporting of new locations of Invasive Alien
Species (IAS). Afterwards, the reported locations are validated by experts in order to avoid false detections. WILDTHING will integrate
gamification techniques to engage and motivate citizens to use the platform. WIDTHING provides a great variety of management tools to
environmental managers in order to monitor the invasive species populations and develop effective and efficient control plans.

The work done during the 6 months of the project has thoroughly been following the work plan signed in the Grant Agreement. In the following lines, the work plan is explained and detailed:
Objective: To analyse the market and confirm the value proposition, determine the business model, identify stakeholders to integrate them into the demonstration process, and confirm business projections to ensure return on investment and the future sustainability of the company.
Tasks: Three different tasks have been implemented during the project execution:
- Task 1: Market and commercialization
- Task 2: Value proposition and business model
- Task 3: Cost, revenues and funding scheme
Objective: To analyse the market and confirm the value proposition, determine the business model, identify stakeholders to integrate them into the demonstration process, and confirm business projections to ensure return on investment and the future sustainability of the company.

WILDTHING has two main differential aspects that go beyond the state of the art and the competitors:
Wildthing will cover not only flora species but also fauna, fungi and microorganisms. And also will cover the marine environment.
Moreover, other platforms are more focused on collecting data for researchers or managers out of the platform itself, but Wildthing allows to collect the data inside the platform.
Concerning the impact of the solution, we estimate it huge, as the number of public municipalities is very big in Europe and the annual costs of invasive species are increasing year by year. The main economic impact will come from savings for the public administration.
As mentioned by the Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the MEP of the European Parliament: “Invasive alien species are the second most significant threat to biodiversity after habitat loss and they are also recognized as a major cause of species extinction” ""Invasive alien species are estimated to cost the European Union at least €12 billion per year and the damage and the costs continue to increase,
