Next-generation, modular computer mouse device for disabled people

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - IntegraMouse3 (Next-generation, modular computer mouse device for disabled people)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2016-12-01 al 2017-02-28

Around 44 million people aged 15 to 64 in Europe have a reported disability. 26% of people aged 16 years or over living in the Europe declared health-related, long-term (lasting more than six months) limitations in usual activities; 8.2% of them reported a severe, and 17.5% a moderate, disability.
Out of these, an estimated 2.6 million people have mobility problems affecting their upper limbs, and around 1.3 million of them require assistive technologies, to be able to perform everyday tasks. These include people suffering from a range of diseases, including multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as varying degrees of paralysis, among them locked-in syndrome in which a person may only be able to move their eyes.
People affected with mobility related disability faced number of issues in the society, the key being:
a) Discrimination b) Accessibility c) Workforce exclusion d) Limited Education leading to opportunity costs of € 37.4 billion in Europe.
Assistive devices help to improve an individual’s functioning and independence to facilitate participation in the society and employment and to enhance overall well being. The global elderly and disabled assistive devices market was valued at € 15.7 billion in 2016 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2016 – 2024. North America is the largest market (€ 5.5 billion) for disabled & elderly assistive technologies since it has largest number of people living with disabilities (53 million). On the other hand, Europe is expected to be the second largest regional market which is valued around € 4.71 billion for disabled & elderly assistive technologies.
IntegraMouse3 will fall in the computer access aids segment within assistive devices which is a market of € 3.2 billion. IntegraMouse3’s mission is to help the people suffering from High-level paraplegia, partial arm amputations and progressive muscular diseases by bringing them back to societal inclusion primarily by providing them tools to perform day-to-day computer tasks, play complex games and social media interaction.
IntegraMouse3‘s key tasks will be the development of golden prototype that will be tested at Lifetool’s premises, followed by pilot testing and validation of prototype in a real environment to scale up. This will be followed by commercialization of the product in 2019 focusing on key markets in Europe and North America.
Our feasibility study consists of a detailed technical, market and financial analysis for the successful commercialization of IntegraMouse3. Technical analysis (from TRL6 to TRL9) of the IntegraMouse3 prototype including initial development and validation in a real environment were studied for execution in Phase 2.
IntegraMouse3 has identified the business model as a combination of the already established distributor model and new channel (Ecommerce). Patent search for infringements with IntegraMouse3 technology were conducted but did not yield conflicting results. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that IntegraMouse3 has freedom to operate internationally without any restrictions.
Our commercialization plan incorporated several elements to identify the right strategy for business model, partnerships and elements needed to go-to-market in Europe starting with Austria, Switzerland and Germany as well as globally. We gathered deep insights about assistive devices market, about existing players and their strengths and weaknesses. We identified the segments of assistive devices we want to target and identified the business model to build sales channel pipeline both through traditional and ecommerce model.
Finally with detailed financial projections, we were able to analyze the profitability of IntegraMouse3 project both in short and long run. IntegraMouse3 Is expected to generate a revenue of €230,000 in Year 1 of launch.
IntegraMouse3 will serve to provide ground breaking improvements in assistive mouse segment specifically targeting social, employment inclusion and advanced gamers. IntegraMouse3 will be a major technological advancement of IntegraMouse Plus incorporating integration of a microphone for voice control (e.g. Siri, Google Assistant), text input and dictation; modular configuration to better serve the user’s purpose (gaming, professional, social/communications), combined with personalization of the mouth piece (e.g. by 3D-printing), which will be of great value considering that users who use IntegraMouse3 for work and gaming will have different requirements to operate the device . IntegraMouse3 will lead to revenue generation of €230,000 in Year 1 and lead to job creation both locally in Austria, Europe and globally. Through this project, we aim to create at least 4 new jobs in the short term for the development phase and more employment opportunities when the product is launched in 2019. The most significant contribution of IntegraMouse3 will be in bringing the disabled back to social inclusion, employment and online platforms (like gaming) which will lead to reduced government spending on provisions and opportunity cost savings of €2.53 million over the period of 2019-2022.
