Project description
Boosting collaboration in nuclear fission and fusion research
The sustainability of nuclear energy relies on the deployment of Generation IV (GenIV) fission systems and thermonuclear fusion. Both GenIV fission and fusion technologies expose materials to high temperatures and irradiation levels, creating common material challenges. The EU-funded M4F project aims to promote collaboration between researchers engaged in nuclear fission and fusion material modelling and characterisation. The project will focus on ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steels, which have excellent radiation-induced swelling resistance and thermal properties but also pose certain challenges. M4F’s goals include developing predictive models for microstructure evolution and deformation under irradiation in F/M steels, as well as developing a methodology to use ion irradiation to assess radiation effects on materials.
Objective
The main goal of M4F project is to bring together the fusion and fission materials communities working on the prediction of microstructural-induced irradiation damage and deformation mechanisms of irradiated ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steels. M4F project is a multidisciplinary one, were both modeling and experiments at different scales will be integrated to foster the understanding of complex phenomena associated to the formation and evolution of irradiation induced defects and their role on the deformation behavior. In addition, an attempt to reduce the gap between the materials science activities as model and experiments, and the needed inputs on design codes will be included
