MOTORCYCLE ALL-IN-ONE SMART TOUR INTEGRATED ROAD SECURITY SYSTEM

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - STS (MOTORCYCLE ALL-IN-ONE SMART TOUR INTEGRATED ROAD SECURITY SYSTEM)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2017-08-01 al 2018-01-31

In 2013 almost 13 000 people were killed in a car and 4 800 people were killed on a motorcycle or moped solely in EU. These figures, however, do not give a completely fair picture of the actual risk for the different vehicle groups as there are more than 250 million cars and only around 11 million motorcycles on the EU roads. (http://ec.europa.eu/transport/road_safety/pdf/statistics/2013_transport_mode.pdf) Road accidents and their consequences remain a serious social problem - on average 75 people lose their lives every day on European roads and 750 are seriously injured.” (MG.3.4-2014. Traffic safety analysis and integrated approach towards the safety of Vulnerable Road Users).Motorcycles are the vehicles that caused the most road safety concerns in recent years. Cars are getting safer and the number of car occupants in fatal road accidents is declining, whilst the trend for motorcyclists safety is much less stable. The overall objective of Smart Tour System is to become the ultimate device and platform for motorcycle security, motorcyclists’ safety, and socializing among motorcyclists.
Smart Tour System – a small black box that is mounted on a motorcycle - is an all-in-one integrated solution that includes active and passive driving assistance. Its main goal is to lower the chances for an accident with an active assistance system, improve the driving skills of motorcyclists with a passive road security system enabling help as soon as anything happens in order to improve survival ratings; and last, but not least STS provides also a possibility to secure the motorcycle against theft. The technology and advanced algorithms we developed, enable us to create a comprehensive, accessible solution that addresses the safety issues of the majority of two the two-wheelers market. The platform, collecting and assessing driving data from the STS users, that we are building, will ease motorcyclists’ handling of the subsystems that will be available within the STS platform and/or in the mobile app and offer additional functionalities including socializing features (sharing driving experience and also connecting internationally). Consequently, our goal is to create an ultimate global community of motorcyclists and other relevant stakeholders, such as motorcycle shops, insurance companies, driving schools, traffic umbrella organisations etc. While gathered driving data will be anonymised, the user will be able to decide if, when and how to share his/her personal driving record.
Cornerstones of all in-one solution:
- Worlds most advanced self-cancelling turn signal system
- Integrated brake module which detects engine braking and turns on brake light
- Driving evaluation and prediction of possibility for accidents
- Privacy of gathered data
- Social platform with road status and warnings
- A learning platform that helps riders improve their drive with advanced analytics
- Integrated eCall with automatic crash detection
- Instant hazard drive warning
- Proprietary technology enabling a device to track motorcycle in case of theft with better signal, more robust to jammers, improved battery, advanced motion analytics and supporting recovery teams
Smart Tour System is not fully developed yet as a final solution. During feasibility study, we have developed a hardware unit (that will be installed on a motorcycle) which is functional and suitable for subsystems testing. The current level of hardware development gives us the ability to test all subsystems. The hardware itself was developed based on first two subsystems that are already on the market (self-cancelling turn signal system and engine braking indicator) and were successfully tested in a real environment with market proof. Self-cancelling turn signals are on the market for almost a year, and the product is type approved and has FCC certificate. To be able to implement all other planned subsystems, and to develop Smart Tour system as an integrated solution, we needed to replace system's processor with one that is capable of processing more information and can do it faster. Afterwards, different communication modules for cellular and Bluetooth communication were added to start developing software subsystems such as a tracker, eCall, driving analytics and others.
- During the feasibility study, our company demonstrated and validated Smart Tour System subsystems in a real environment ( Prototypes with different communication systems were prepared, and subsystems were tested separately in a real environment - eCall, tracking, data extraction and analytics; self-cancelling module and brake module were tested before)
- We have tested different cellular module to find most suitable one for our subsystem (application). The most important discovery is that, by the data gathered, the most suitable module would be one of the NB-IoT low-frequency modules that have better connectivity in a critical situation and better jammer resistance. Unfortunately, such modules are not widely used yet, and they still need a lot of improvements. Therefore their price is still rather high, and functionality is limited, but we can expect great progress in forthcoming months and years.
- We have tested usability and efficiency of individual STS features in order according to customers needs and pains(tracking module, eCall, self, cancelling turn signals, brake module & learning modules and grades. The results were very successful, the only problem that remains to be solved is connectivity in underground garages (this will be possible with next-generation cellular modules)
We are satisfied with the work and development done during the SME – Phase one. Nevertheless, we are aware that real work and problems are still ahead of us. We are pleased that our study has confirmed most of our first assumptions but now it is our job to deliver this product according to the expectations of users. For this we are planning to apply for SME – phase II to receive funds for development to phase TRL 9 and successful marketing exploitation of the project. If that will not be possible, we are planning to obtain private investors to continue down our path to safer roads for motorcyclists. In the meantime, we might be able to fully develop and market at least one subsystem to expand the range of safety products for motorcyclists.
Since the weather has improved (which is extremely important for real-life tests on a motorcycle) we can continue with subsystem tests and start connecting them into a prototype with all subsystems integrated. We are extremely pleased with the community acceptance of new safety solutions that Smart Tour System will include. We believe that motorcyclist can and will be safer on the road. We have a clear vision on how to achieve this and we are proud to be a part of this journey.
