Data Analysis in AMANDA and Monte Carlo simulation in IceCube

Final Activity Report Summary - ASTRONU (Data Analysis in AMANDA and Monte Carlo Simulation in IceCube)

Neutrino astronomy is a promising tool in astrophysics which is starting to mature. Since they are neutral and weakly interacting, neutrinos are unique tools to study the Universe at high energies.

The main objective of this project was to analyse data of the major neutrino telescopes in the world, namely AMANDA / IceCube in the South Pole and ANTARES in the Mediterranean Sea.

During the outgoing stage, my main contribution was the analysis of the burst of the soft gamma repeater 1806-20. This was a magnetar whose burst was observed on December the 24th in 2005 and was the most intense explosion ever recorded in our galaxy. I also studied the atmospheric neutrino flux measured by IceCube in its 9-line configuration. In ANTARES, my main task was to prepare the search for point-like sources with the data of the 5-line configuration. This could render possible the identification of the first neutrino sources in the southern hemisphere.
