Microdata analysis for Policies for Productivity, Innovation, Growth and Inclusion

Project description

Cross-country analysis of the micro-drivers of productivity

Productivity and employment growth are not the same in every country. Differences are based on the role of policies in Europe and beyond. Understanding these differences is important to the development of individual country policy efforts to foster innovation and growth, ultimately achieving fairer and more inclusive societies. In this context, the EU-funded MapProdIGI project will provide new evidence on trends in business dynamism and productivity growth. It will also build a comprehensive evidence base for policymaking on the role of innovation policies and structural policies. The project also aims to foster knowledge sharing on firm-level data analysis. The findings will shed light on new trends in business dynamics and productivity. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will also be considered.

Objective

This project is part of efforts to go beyond the so-called “average firm paradigm” when studying cross-country differences in productivity and employment growth and understand the role of policies in Europe and beyond. The evidence base created by this project - based on a unique representative base of firm-level data from a large number of countries - can contribute to the coordination and increased focus of individual country policy efforts to design research and innovation policies and foster framework conditions that foster innovation, productivity growth and diffusion with the ultimate goal of achieving fairer and more inclusive societies. Thus, this project implements the goals of the Horizon 2020 Work Programme “Europe in a Changing World: inclusive, innovative and reflective societies.

Building on OECD’s unique expertise and access to a sizeable network of official national experts; government officials and statistical offices this project aims to:
1. Provide new evidence on trends in business dynamism, productivity growth and productivity dispersion building internationally comparable representative evidence for a large set of countries.
2. Build a comprehensive evidence base for policy making on the role of innovation policies; structural policies and framework conditions for achieving inclusive growth in globalised digital economies. This would be achieved through within- and cross-country econometric micro-data analysis.
3. Foster knowledge sharing on firm-level data analysis in the areas of productivity and business dynamics in Europe and beyond.
