Objective
This project aims to develop an integrated kanban system capable of managing a complex production-supply situation where the lean production approach is being applied.
Kanban is a well-known "pull" production control system of the JIT manufacturing approach, and one of the keys of Japanese industrial success. This technique is known also in Europe, but the implementation and continuous management of a kanban system is difficult in the European industrial environment, where most major manufacturing firms use the "MRP" type of approaches.
The aim of IKS is to provide advanced support tools for designing and implementing a kanban system for specific production scenarios. It will also provide the necessary hardware and software infrastructure to integrate the MRP for those suppliers that are too distant to operate a conventional kanban.
The project is the result of the integration of four different tools or islands: design, diagnostic and simulation, kanban tools and autodidactics.
The final result will be a system that merges the JIT philosophy with the needs of European manufacturing enterprises allowing a risk-free, quick introduction of this modern production management approach into the European industrial environment.
