The EU has set an 80% reduction goal in primary energy consumption by 2050, but the overall improvement in energy efficiency is offset by the low renewal rate of the existing buildings (about 1% annually) compared with the target (2,5%) necessary to redevelop the entire EU asset. BIM4EEB propose methods and tools for overcoming barriers arising in different stages of the renovation process through different connected tools. The project objectives are:
OBJ 1 - TO MAXIMISE EFFICIENCY IN BUILDING RENOVATION
BIM4EEB covers each stage of a renovation considering: time reduction; cost saving; building quality control and net primary energy use decrease; disturbance experienced by the inhabitants decrease. Detailed and interconnected information enables smoother data flows and interaction between parties and through: faster survey, BIM modelling and checking, clash detection, energy audit and efficient time management. An improved accuracy leads to reduction of unexpected variations, work suspensions and re-works costs. The centralization of all data allow quality driven corrective actions during and after renovation processes, such as speeding up the comparison process between different renovation options.
OBJ 2 - TO ACCELERATE THE MARKET UPTAKE ACROSS EUROPE TOWARDS A DIGITAL BUILT ENVIRONMENT
BIM4EEB has developed an innovative set of products for the building renovation sector in the form of a methodology and technological platform, providing practical solutions for deriving advantages of BIM implementation within the retrofitting industry. The project has new synergies and centralised modes of interaction, enabling an increase in building renovation rates, alleviating technical barriers with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), lowering financial barriers, and enabling accurate energy savings forecasts. Linked data Geo Positioning enhanced as-build BIM models with additional information and a Digital Logbook store all data, related to the building, and to be exploited mostly in the operational phase.
OBJ 3 - TO SPEED DATA GATHERING AND PROCESSING
Data gathering and processing has been speeded-up through an AR tool for fast mapping of buildings geometry and services. An additional Innovative software platform, connected with BIM models, supports the automated configuration, design, and layout of Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS), through an holistic and standardized data exchange process. User’s preferences about comfort, and feedbacks from building occupants are also collected and inhabitants get insights about building comfort levels as well information about the renovation process.
By analysing data from different perspectives, BIM4EEB speeded-up decision-making for different renovation scenarios.
OBJ 4 - TO ENSURE INTEROPERABILITY AMONG DIFFERENT STAKEHOLDERS AND TOOLS, HARMONISING AND PROVIDING COMMON DATA EXCHANGE FORMATS
The link created between data sources establishes channels of interconnection and communication between parties and relevant stakeholders, reducing the coordination problems caused by the fragmented nature of renovation projects. The BIM management system enable the controlled publication of building data on the Web and the integration of models and datasets using loosely-coupled cross-model linking and a semantic interoperability framework based on Linked Data and Digital Construction Ontologies (DiCon). The central platform provides different services for managing information collected in renovation processes (i.e. BIM models, data coming from sensors, information about the renovation process…) and avoids information redundancy and losses.
