Periodic Reporting for period 2 - INTERRFACE (TSO-DSO-Consumer INTERFACE aRchitecture to provide innovative grid services for an efficient power system)

With the growth of renewables, the increased interconnection of European grids, the development of local energy initiatives, and the specific requirements on TSO – DSO cooperation as set forth in the different Network Codes and Guidelines, TSOs and DSOs face new challenges that will require greater coordination. The European Commission adopted legislative proposals on the energy market that promote cooperation among network operators as they procure balancing, congestion management and ancillary services. The measures encourage procurement of services at both the transmission and distribution level, recognizing that this will enable more efficient and effective network management, will increase the level of demand response and the capacity of renewable generation. TSOs and DSOs must now define the services they want to procure in collaboration with market participants, and must set up ways to procure them in a coordinated manner. Digitalisation is a key driver for coordination and active system management in the electricity grid, enabling TSOs and DSOs to optimise the use of distributed resources and ensure a cost-effective and secure supply of electricity but also empowers end-users to become active market participants, supporting self-generation and providing demand flexibility. To support the transformation, the INTERRFACE project will design, develop and exploit an Interoperable pan-European Grid Services Architecture to act as the interface between the power system (TSO and DSO) and the customers and allow the seamless and coordinated operation of all stakeholders to use and procure common services. State-of-the-art digital tools will provide new opportunities for electricity market participation and thus engage consumers into the INTERRFACE proposed market structures that will be designed to exploit Distributed Energy Resources.
During the second reporting period of the project the following achievements can be reported:
• Addressed the ethical issues and requirements of the project and outlined the project approach on the procedures to be implemented for data collection, storage, protection, retention and destruction and confirmation that they comply with national and EU legislation
• Finalized and updated the market and services designs and the product definitions
• Finalized and updated the IEGSA architecture, including functional and non-functional requirements and system Use-cases
• Designed a market analysis evaluation method and assessed the market designs proposed by the project
• Finalized the IEGSA 1st release and the integration with the demonstrators of the project.
• Finalized the tools and services of the demos
• Finalized the necessary activities for the blockchain technological components needed in Demo 6.2
• Defined all IEGSA related interfaces and applied the CIM (Common Information Model)
• Finalized the design and implementation of the IEGSA Data Management Middleware
• Prepared IEGSA user and deployment manuals
• Finalized the preparatory activities of all project Demo and performed the integration with IEGSA. Installed necessary equipment and performed all necessary tests. Finalized the demo concepts and prepared the operational scenarios
• Initiated the piloting phase of the demonstrators
• Performed a thorough research for cascade funding mechanism, EU funding regulations, various cascade funding methodologies of H2020, PCI Projects and national ones
• Launched the Open Calls dissemination campaign for attracting interest of candidate applicants
• Prepared the Business Use-Cases for the Open Call projects
• Gathered evaluated and selected the successful Open Call Proposals
• Performed the contracting of the successful Open Call Applicants
• Initiated the activities of the successful Open Call Projects
• Prepared and/or participated in communication and awareness raising activities promoting the project and its results in web, social and physical means:
o Kept social media up to date
o Several scientific publications
o Participation to events at national and European level (conferences, events and workshops)
o Participation to BRIDGE initiative activities and meetings
o Established contact with our twin-project CoordiNET
o Issued Newsletter
o Published recommendations for new network codes
o Continued the synergy with the OPEN DEI H2020 project
• Timely and appropriate trouble-shooting, immediate reaction to problems and misunderstandings and adequate use of all project resources by the project and technical management
• Organized 2 INTERRFACE Flexibility Webinars
INTERRFACE supports pan-European RES penetration, sector development, and global leadership by implementing and testing cutting edge technologies in a cost-effective and coordinated manner. It is a crucial enabler to achieving the EU Energy Union and is in line with the Clean Energy Package, which sets out the EU’s ambition to its global leadership in RES, market integration and the need for consumers to be active and central players of the energy market of the future. INTERRFACE helps to integrate the roles of energy sector actors and to engage energy assets such as renewable generation and demand response. The project provides an architecture that can integrate the main tools and data for TSOs, DSOs, power exchanges and market participants, and enables communication between different data hubs and market participants, facilitating market integration.
INTERRFACE will demonstrate services for congestion management and local flexibility in the network, supporting the integration of new and existing distributed generation projects, and promoting innovative business models relating to emerging technologies such as bulk electrical energy storage. It will engage energy assets such as renewable generation and demand response in new ways in the energy market.
