Project description
Advanced tooling for composite manufacturing
Carbon-fibre reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) are lightweight, yet exceptionally strong materials used in the manufacturing of numerous products, especially in the aerospace, ship-building and the automotive industries. They comprise a polymer matrix carefully combined with a fibre to enhance the mechanical strength and elasticity of the polymer. However, current injection moulding machines used to shape CFRPs are complex, heavy and expensive. The EU-funded project INNOTOOL 4.0 will address these challenges by developing low-cost, robust and lightweight tooling with an integrated dynamic system for mould temperature control. Such advanced tooling will enable the design and manufacture of highly precise, complex-shaped composite structures.
Objective
For complex shaped and high performance CFRP structures the metal moulding tools currently in use are complex, heavy and expensive. The project aims to develop robust, wear resistant, lightweight, low cost tooling with integrated dynamic controlled electrical heating system, that is suitable for high pressure resin injection processes and complex shaped products
