Understanding the impact of ex vivo perfusion on organ physiology
Considering the shortage of donor kidneys, transplant centres are employing normothermic machine perfusion to better evaluate organs prior to transplantation. However, little is known about the molecular pathways that are active during perfusion. To address this problem, the EU-funded PRE-IMAGE project will undertake molecular and multi-omics analyses alongside the imaging of ex vivo perfused kidneys to identify biomarkers specifically associated with ex vivo physiology and transplantation outcome. The behaviour of ex vivo perfused kidneys will be compared to the organ's state in vivo, and personalised pre-transplant prediction models will be generated for improved post-transplant outcomes.
