Project description
An improved root canal treatment
Root canal treatment, known as endodontic obturation, is time-consuming and in many instances ineffective due to the lack of suitable filling solutions. This means that dentists often cannot use a post to reinforce the tooth or are obliged to repeat the treatment to prevent bacteria infiltration. After taking into consideration dentists' demands, the EU-funded SOFT-CORE 2K project has developed a fast and easy to use system for root canal procedures. The solution is made of a natural, biocompatible polymer that provides dense three-dimensional filling and a more efficient obturation treatment.
Objective
With a market forecasted to reach ~$21 billion by 2023, the prevalence of root-canal treatments is expected to increase in the following years, due to the global rise in elderly population, incidence of dental caries, etc.
However, statistically, these treatments fail long-term in up to 50% of the cases due to the lack of 100% efficient obturation techniques: currently commercialized root-canal filling solutions are complex, time consuming, expensive and may hinder the placement of a post (used to increase the tooth´s resistance) or retreatment (needed when the root canal treatment fails)- due to the presence of a plastic core which is left inside the root canal.
At CMS Dental we have been developing dental products for endodontic and periodontic treatments for over 20 years. Our close relationship with dental product distributors (our customers) enabled us to identify their need for cost-effective root-canal filling solutions that would meet the demands of dentists for fast, easy to use systems that also enable and facilitate retreatments (i.e. eliminate the plastic).
And so, to solve these problems we have developed Soft Core 2K, the first carrier-based root canal obturation system made 100% of gutta percha (GP- natural, biocompatible polymenr) which, thanks to its two-component design (with two kinds of GP) grants an efficient, dense three-dimensional filling (including lateral root canal fillings), as well as a successful post placement and retreatment.
The market launch of Soft Core 2K will be a great boost for our company, enabling us to become leader providers of root-canal filling systems: not only will it imply a 160% increase of our current revenues by 2022 (€4.5 million) and a 55% increase in our staff, but it will also enable us to enter the Asian market, something that was not possible with any other Carrier Based GP system until now, due to their strict regulations for plastic carrier-based root canal systems.
