Electronic glasses which use computer vision and augmented reality to improve visual capacity and increase autonomy of people who have low vision

Description du projet

Who is Biel? Biel is a child who has low vision. We are a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, composed by
professionals coming from the ICT business, from the clinical research and from the vision diseases research, that have
joined to develop smart electronic glasses for Biel and for all who suffer from this disability. Low vision is a condition caused
by eye disease, in which vision is permanently limited and cannot be improved with regular glasses, medicine, or surgery. It
is much more common than blindness. There are about 220 million people in the world which suffer low vision, and it grows
with the aging of the population. People with low vision have severe problems for doing common tasks, like descending
stairs, walking alone, understanding street signs or reading. It hampers their lives, professionally and personally. The most
handicapping issues are related to mobility. We use computer vision, AI and VR/AR technologies to improve perception
capacity of people who have low vision. “Biel Smartgaze” glasses will detect obstacles, holes, changes in the ground surface
and street signs. The glasses will identify these items and use augmented reality to show them in a way that the users can
perceive with their remaining vision. It will include other features like zoom, image improvement (definition, lightning and
contrast), etc., in order to facilitate reading and other tasks, providing a complete solution that suits the needs of the people
with low vision. Other advanced features like navigation and people recognition will be added in future versions, giving
people with low vision the tools to face any situation in their daily life. The glasses will be configurable to personalize all the
functions for each particular case. The goal of our company is not just to let people who have low vision to see better, but to
leverage all the potential of their remaining vision by adding the perception capacities they lack, in order to bring them back
to a normal life
