Objectif Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the largest world health problems: annually 10 million people become ill and 1.5 million people die from TB. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) this is largely attributed to the fact that 4 million TB patients are not diagnosed each year, due to lack of a good diagnostic tests. According to European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in 2017 323.000 new cases of TB have been registered and 32.000 Europeans died from TB. On global scale all pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organisations and life science research institutes depend on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) instruments for swift (bio-molecular interaction) detection of diseases and for specific research. SPR is an inherently expensive technique and therefore limited available. There is globally a large unmet need for a cost-effective instrument with similar functionality and sensitivity as SPR and multiplexing capabilities for measuring such real‐time biomolecular interactions. Delta Diagnostics has developed an instrument capable of swift bio-molecular interaction detection. This instrument employs Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), more specifically so-called ring resonators. Within this project Delta Diagnostics sets out to study the feasibility of the development of a minimal viable product (MVP) of this low cost instrument. This instrument can rival conventional SPR sensors, yet at a fraction (close to a tenth) of the costs. The MVP will make label-free biomolecular interaction analysis technology globally available in a small and cost-effective device. The platform technology behind it, will further contribute to the development of even smaller and more versatile and more accurate point of care (portable) diagnostics. The product will disrupt the world of clinical, chemical and biological laboratories and scientific institutions and will contribute greatly to making portable diagnostics globally available.
