The intelligent online platform for lean packaging eco-design

Project description

An ‘e-way’ to design green packaging

Eco-friendly packaging is good for the environment since it is made from alternative, recyclable or biodegradable materials. But the design of this packaging, which is in high demand, is hindered by a slow, difficult and complex workflow. There is a need in the packaging industry to accelerate the time to market. The EU-funded e-pack 3D project has a solution based on an online collaborative platform for the packaging ecosystem, which allows to customise packaging directly in 3D and validation at the point of sale through augmented reality and 3D printing without 3D software design expertise. It is building on strong partnerships with packaging manufacturers interested in testing the prototype up to a market-ready solution.

Objective

About 80% of all environmental impact in the packaging sector starts with the initial phase of its design since it determines the packaging sustainability. The process of prototyping and validating the packaging design is slow, difficult and costly due to the complex workflow integrating the different players in the final design. There is a need in the rigid packaging industry to accelerate the time to market of eco-designed packages. Currently, there is no solution in the market that offer a lean & agile packaging design while the new EU Circular Economy strategy and eco-consumers demands 100% recyclable or 100% reusable or 100% compostable packages. Our e-pack 3D SaaS (TRL6) is based on an online collaborative platform for the packaging ecosystem, which allows customize packaging directly in 3D and validation at the point of sale through Augmented Reality and 3D printing without 3D software design expertise. 3D click´s team has strong expertise in the packaging industry, AR&AI, packaging design & validation, and Circular Economy. We accelerate the time-to market of new packaging products by 88% by providing digital 3D mock-ups in real time with eco-design criteria. So far, we have raised a total of €450,000 to develop our technology (e.g. VIAGALICIA, WA4STEAM) and been selected to participate in prestigious acceleration programmes such as startupbootcamp Commerce and FIWARE Accelerator. We have strong partnerships with packaging manufacturers, technological centres, designers and brands in Spain (Packaging Cluster, Ecoembes), the Netherlands (Innoleaps, Friesland Campina), and Germany (Nivea) that are interested in testing our prototype up to a market-ready solution. We aim to become the leading company in the packaging sourcing, design and validation market and now we are applying to the SME Instrument Phase 1 to carry out a Feasibility Study.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
