Studies of Quantum-Gravitational Relativity Violations

Obiettivo

The largest gap in our understanding of nature at the elementary level is arguably a unified quantum theory of all fundamental forces including gravity. Despite substantial theoretical efforts, observable effects are either unknown or expected to lie below the sensitivity of most experiments. However, violations of Einstein's Relativity have recently been identified as promising experimental quantum-gravity signals. Discovery potential for these signals exists in certain observations associated with cosmic rays, varying couplings, and neutrino oscillations. The modern Standard-Model Extension (SME) has become the standard framework for the identification and interpretation of experimental Relativity tests (e.g. PARCS, RACE, and SUMO on the International Space Station). At present, expertise in theoretical SME research lies undoubtedly in the US.

The principal objective of the present project is the integration of this emerging research field into European science through a well-balanced combination of theoretical and phenomenological SME investigations. The purely theoretical analyses are aimed at gaining a deeper insight into Relativity-violating mechanisms and at providing the massless sectors of the SME with a more solid foundation. The expected phenomenological consequences of these studies will be addressed in a subsequent part of this project. They are likely to be of importance for neutrino oscillations, for the investigation of astrophysical effects, and the analysis of certain Relativity tests (e.g. European space-based experiments, such as ACES scheduled for the International Space Station and the German OPTIS proposal). This timely cutting-edge Relativity research has the potential to unlock some of the most fundamental secrets of our Universe during the Einstein centennial year 2005.
