CRESCENT: Adaptive hands-free controller for people with disabilities

Obiettivo

In Europe today, an ever-growing population (over 4.3%) disabled by upper limb deficiency are unable
to use digital devices. Assistive technology devices have been created to enable people with disabilities to use
computer, tablets or smartphones. Conventional input devices allow individuals to control their computers through
means other than a standard keyboard or pointing device. However, these solutions present many limitations:
they generally require additional software or hardware such as connectors, cameras, etc. Their dependency on a
camera put serious limitation on the motion of the user by keeping him stationary. In addition, some are only able
to be used with specific operating systems, within a given program or single PC. Moreover, these devices have
no sensibility related to disorders of involuntary spasms, such as CP and Parkinson's, or reduced muscle
function, such as those suffering from paralysis and amputation. 6Degrees has developed the first Intuitive Motion
Controller: Crescent is a light, wearable band that enables the user to control any PC, Tablet or Smartphone with
ease, effectively replacing a mouse or finger on a touch screen. It uses wireless communication and requires no
added programs. Using a patented, adaptable, self-calibrating and learning algorithm, Crescent is a plug-and-play
Bluetooth device that, worn on the upper arm, translates gross arm movement into commands. Crescent provides
all-in-one solution, aimed at the Upper Limb deficiency as a whole. 6Degrees seeks funding to conduct a
feasibility study to prove technical and commercial viability, conducting an analytical exercise to position the
product. The objective is to test the economic viability of the platform among a larger pool of potential clients
(user-acceptance), and to assess if the chosen commercialization approach will be conducive of the projected
growth on the European level.
