Scientists have long been using routine blood tests to evaluate molecules circulating in the blood stream, using their levels to diagnose conditions and diseases largely related to the cardiovascular and metabolic systems. Over the last decades, research has identified an increasing number of proteins and protein fragments as sophisticated biomarkers of a plethora of diseases, and the number will continue to grow. A platform able to identify multiple proteins and miRNA in biofluids would be the key enabling technology to unleash the potential of these biomarkers for early diagnosis and treatment of conditions from neurodegenerative diseases to cancers. The EU-funded NanoPD_P project has set its sights on such a platform. If successful, it will revolutionise healthcare and patient outcomes.
