Optimal use of healthcare resources through AI-guided support of healthcare professionals

Project description

Smart solution optimises healthcare resource allocation

Delivering services with high quality in the most cost effective and efficient manner in healthcare hinges on patient flow. This refers to the ability to manage patients effectively and with minimal delays. Improving patient flow into, within and out of hospitals is necessary to maximise operational efficiency – a top priority. The EU-funded Medical Express project will develop a modular platform that can integrate easily into existing IT structures and electronic health records. Using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this B2B solution for healthcare providers facilitates data analysis, reporting and decision-making. Already tested in Sweden’s primary care sector, general practitioners reported a 50 % increase in the number of patients per day with this AI-guided solution.

Objective

MedicalExpress (ME) is an AI-based innovation that optimises patient flow processes. It is a B2B solution for healthcare providers, developed to generate added value for patients and caregivers alike. ME is the result of 10 years of R&D together with clinicians, nurses and input from collaborators from academia, IT and pharma (e.g. Yale, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, ETH Zurich, Novo Nordisk and Sigma).electo
ME is currently implemented in 30% of Sweden’s public primary care, where is has proven to allow each general practitioner (GP) to see 50% more patients/day, generating cost savings on the order of €100 000 per GP/year. By increasing efficiency, ME increases access to care, improves patient safety and generates cost savings not only for payers, but also by decreasing work absenteeism.
Our offer is completely unique and the only CE-marked solution of its kind in Europe. ME is a comprehensive modular platform, which seamlessly integrates into existing IT structures and EHR (electronic health records). Being modular, ME can be fully customised to meet specific client needs. ME doesn’t replace jobs and retains diagnostic decision-making with experienced healthcare professionals. Our AI augments personnel in compiling and analysing data, creating reports and supporting decision-making in a way that liberates vital time that can be spent on tending after the patients. Having won several public tenders in competitions with international e-Health providers, we have demonstrated ME to be a great market fit as well as the most attractive solution to the prevailing resource management problem.
In the project, we will roll out the solution for several new market segments and launch or product throughout Europe and the US. The project will take our market-validated solution through a rapid market replication phase that will create >20 new jobs in the EU alone. 5 years after having penetrated into new market segments, we anticipate revenues on the order of €35M.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
