Trans in Translation: Multilingual practices and local/global gender and sexuality discourses in Polish transition narratives

Project description

Conceptualising transgender issues in Poland

In central and eastern Europe, transsexuality is still often perceived as a concept imposed by Western epistemologies. The EU-funded TRANSlation project will study Polish gender transition narratives as they are disclosed through selected social media, aiming to investigate the use of multilingual and cultural-linguistic translation activities in local and global gender and sexuality debates. It will show how the creative language of transition stories manages to individualise, localise and modernise the representation of gender transition, delivering innovative research on the production of knowledge by Polish transgender social media users. By using a corpus of publicly available blogs and YouTube channels, the project will contribute to a better understanding of the conceptualisation of transgender issues in Poland and the way gender discourses travel globally.
