Sustainable Use of Metallic Resources: Industrial Waste Prevention

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ReCreo (Sustainable Use of Metallic Resources: Industrial Waste Prevention)

Berichtszeitraum: 2019-11-01 bis 2020-02-29

ChemBrot Oy Ltd. (founded 2013) is a Finnish environmental waste management company that specialises in developing and operating different hazardous waste treatment technologies.
Waste metals generated in surface treatment industry processes are not recycled, but 1,800 million litres of metal-rich acidic waste is disposed every year. The ReCreo treatment is a zero-waste process for metal-rich acidic waste: it regenerates the acidic solution back to the process and extracts metals in the form of salt for re-use. Waste is decreased by 100%. ChemBrot Ltd. has a pilot plant with a capacity of 2 million litres of waste per year. ChemBrot aims to scale up and the reduction of +100 million litres of hazardous waste disposed on landfills with own facilities and technology licensing.
The innovation covers important values of sustainability, waste prevention, resource efficiency, circular economy and cost-savings.
Market opportunity is significant. The surface treatment, galvanization and printed circuit boards manufacturing Total Addressable Market (TAM) is approximately 250 million € in Europe and 1.7 billion € globally. There is substantial demand for technologies and methods that would be able to replace the current, expensive and hazardous waste generating methods and fulfil EU level waste and chemical legislation. The ReCreo treatment answers the aims of EU policies: The Green Deal, Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC), Directive 2010/75/EC on industrial emissions (integrated pollution prevention and control), Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 on REACH, An EU action plan for the Circular Economy (COM/2015/0614).
This feasibility study aimed to analyse the feasibility from different perspectives. The feasibility study covered technical, practical and economic feasibility. The results were gathered to a full business plan for the commercialisation of ReCreo innovation. The innovation has scale-up potential on global markets.
The scale-up strategy has been estimated and developed during the project. New partnerships have been formed to support the technology finalisation and business scale-up. The company has confirmed the feasibility of the technology and detailed the stages towards global commercialisation. The project resulted in a full business plan describing the steps to market.
