Precisely Patterned Nanofibers for High Performance Bioseparations

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - PURE (Precisely Patterned Nanofibers for High Performance Bioseparations)

Berichtszeitraum: 2021-10-01 bis 2023-03-31

Bioseparation is a critical step in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. It employs polymeric adsorbents decorated with affinity ligands to increase the selective capture of target biological products. The EU-funded PURE project aims to develop precisely functionalised adsorbents. The project has brought together an interdisciplinary team of leading scientists from academia and industry with expertise in biology, chemistry, computational modelling, materials science, bioprocess engineering and applied social sciences.
Biopharmaceutical drugs save lives and drastically improve well-being. The number of new bio-drugs approved or in pipeline is rising but only 1/4 of patients have access to them. Bioseparation is a critical step in biopharmaceuticals manufacture. Bioseparation processes have low productivity and are responsible for the environmental footprint and high cost of manufacturing. Only a radical change in purification technologies can reduce the environmental footprint of biopharma industry, and increase productivity, making biopharmaceuticals quickly accessible to all.
Scientific and engineering principles are combined to produce the adsorbents of the future, putting Europe in the forefront of sustainable and patient-oriented biopharma. PURE brings together leading scientists and a SME as a highly interdisciplinary team with expertise in biology, chemistry, computational modelling, materials science, bioprocess engineering and applied social sciences.
The new scientific knowledge and technological paradigm established in PURE have a wide window of opportunities. PURE revolutionizes the way advanced functional materials are thought today and enables a new future.
The project has been successfully implemented and achieved the deliverables and milestones expected for the first years. In more detail, the team has focused on the bioproduction of reactive non-canonical amino acids and on the design and synthesis of affinity ligands.
Also, the first steps towards the production and characterization of purification adsorbents have been made.
The project has been presented through diverse platforms, e.g. radio, websites and youtube, and beneficiaries participated in conferences and scientific events to disseminate the project (https://pure-fetopen.eu/communication/).
Until the end of March 2023, PURE has 4 scientific outputs (1 published article (doi: 10.1016/j.biotechadv.2022.107986) and 3 thesis/dissertations). The PURE team has participated in 14 international scientific conferences (1 best communication award), 2 industry-oriented conferences, 3 workshops and 4 events other than conferences or workshops. PURE members also participated in 6 outreach activities, namely in public schools, Pint of Science, EXPO FCT and European Researchers’ Night (2020 & 2022).
The main communication channel of the PURE project is the webpage (https://pure-fetopen.eu/) where all the information related with the project can be found as well as the PURE leaflet, the PURE 1st newsletter and the 1st episode of #PURE_project In A Nutshell series.
PURE´s team is working hard to deliver precisely functionalised adsorbents for purification of biopharmaceuticals. The new adsorbents will bring several advantages over the current purification methods, namely higher process productivity and sustainability.
