Centre of innovative solutions to reduce risks from natural hazards
Europe is experiencing an increasing number of disasters due to severe and extreme weather and climate events. The more vulnerable a community is to such natural hazards, the greater the risk of human and material losses. The EU-funded ISTOS project will strengthen the scientific excellence and innovation capacity of the Advanced Infrastructures and Materials Laboratory established at the Frederick Research Center (FRC) and the Large Structures Laboratory established at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). The project’s goal is to explore the main stages of a disaster as well as ways to mitigate the impacts. To that end, it seeks to turn the collaborative laboratories at FRC and CUT into a centre of excellence based in Cyprus. It will also create links with Greece’s Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Italy’s PLINIVS Study Centre, University of Naples Federico II.
