University of Kragujevac (UKG), Serbia and specifically the group of Prof. Nenad Filipovic is a research group active in the field of multiscale modeling and medical informatics in biomedical engineering. The group has published numerous studies in scientific journals and has participated in FP7, H2020 and other international RDI projects. Prof. Filipovic spent several years at Harvard University and upon returning to Serbia he founded a strong group of young researchers specialized to perform research in the field of biomedical engineering. Although the group produces significant research results, either as outcomes of collaboration with local medical staff or through EU research projects, the quality of those remains limited and most of the results have been published in journals with low IF. The target of the TWINNING action SGABU is to enhance research capacity and capabilities of UKG, through collaboration with four EU leading research institutions - University of Ioannina, Greece; Vienna University of Technology, Austria; Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium and Newcastle University, the UK. These four universities are widely recognized in producing high quality research results and are very active in performing research in the field of multiscale modelling and medical informatics in biomedical engineering. Exchange of know-how and scientific experience between UKG and the EU partners will be accomplished through meetings at UKG at the partner institutions; study visits of staff members to the partner institutions and their labs; summer school, workshops. One of the main project results will be a computational platform for multiscale modelling in biomedical engineering which will be integrated, tested and validated on the patients with cardiovascular, bone and cancer disease.
