Modelling of wave breaking at arificial Coastal Reefs

Obiettivo

The project aims to provide advanced training of the Researcher via implementation of an extensive scientific research in the field modelling of breaking wave passing an artificial coastal reef.

Research objectives of the project are:
- To study intensity of wave breaking as function of reef properties (geometry, permeability, type of revetment), including evaluation of influence of horizontal and vertical structure of turbulence and vorticity
- To develop related criteria for occurrence and type of breaking
- To build a CFD based (STAR CD) numerical model of breaking waves over submerged reef, based on VOF (volume of fluid) technique
- To develop tools and methodology for generating extreme-height solitary waves ("killer- waves") in a laboratory wave flume
- To set-up basic guidelines for hydraulic design of artificial submerged reefs, based on integrated modelling, numerical analysis and verification with the tests data

Specific training objectives include:
- Application of advanced computer systems (CF D - STAR CD) for numerical simulation of breaking of waves passing large submerged obstacles
- Application of advanced methods and tools for flow measurement, including LDV (Laser Dopler Velocimetry) and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) techniques
- Building expertise in application of integrated modelling of coastal structures, using specialised new-generation hydrodynamics and wave-predictions models (MIKE 3, MIKE 21, SWAN)

Various methods shall be applied to reach the project objectives, such as physical model tests, data processing and analysis, theoretical study, development of numerical models; experimental testing; software development.

The Project will meet the objectives by consecutive implementation of the activities, according to the Work plan, and using the experience of the host organization via consultancy and advice provided by the Project Supervisor.

Campo scientifico (EuroSciVoc)
