A RADIO NETWORK TECHNOLOGY FOR SHORT RANGE MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS. VALIDATION, ASSIMILATION AND TECHNOLOGY DIFFUSION ACTIONS.

Obiettivo

The ARCHIPELAGO project is focusing on the pilot implementation, validation and demonstration of a wireless telecommunication network to provide narrowband - Internet compatible - data and voice services, at rates of 2.4-19.2 Kbps, to vessel traffic management authorities as well as ships or smaller vessels crossing environmentally and/or commercially sensitive areas.
The core of the implementation will be an existing radio system (originally built for shored based telemetry and data applications) designed on innovative ESMR (Enhanced Specialised Mobile Radio) system principles. This system will be scaled up and adapted. A series of actions is planned to address standardisation issues, define IPR strategy for the SMEs involved in the project, and diffuse the technology throughout Europe.
An ArchiPELAGO network is intending to support some of the following application scenarios: - Automatic ship identification and reporting - Updating of electronic charts used by on board Electronic display systems (ECDIS) - Transmission of coded messages (based on standard IMO vocabulary and messages) - Fishing fleet surveillance/Surveillance of environmentally sensitive sea areas - Ship to ship data communications - Coast guard short message, data/e-mail and voice, (ship to ship and ship to shore) - E-mail over Internet and WWW browsing - Fleet management (for instance: fishing fleet surveillance) - Access of port/ship operator's Intranets - Access, via Internet/Intranet or directly, of databases and Travel Information.
In the next few years European Union Countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece will invest millions of ECUs in vessel traffic management (VTS) infrastructures. This is due to the fact that today's VTS make extensive use of very expensive radar sensors, covering a limited geopraphical area.
ArchiPELAGO ship terminal is designed primarily as an efficient ship automatic identification and reporting device. It offers similar functionality to other transponder development concepts. The innovative approach (the ship communication terminal can support, simultaneously, both safety driven tasks as well "value added" tasks) will certainly provide additional benefits to operators and end users.
