Automated evaluation systems for mathematics

Objective

It is difficult for people who have discontinued initial training to resume an abandoned course or commence a new one. The aim of this project is to provide a whole range of individuals who are outside traditional educational structures with the opportunity of participating in a step-by-step learning system on a limited-objective basis. More specifically, the project partners have defined the goal of setting up a computer-based European system of accreditation for mathematical skills.

Anyone from elementary to matriculation+2 level can demonstrate and validate his or her level in mathematics using a simple computerised test. This test (Aévèm), which is based on groups of modules at different levels, will be available to the candidate on the Internet. Mathematical skills will be redefined to take account of modern economic and industrial realities before the modules are made available. To ensure that the programmes are not unduly influenced by local traditions, the partnership has involved universities and companies from seven different countries. All of the tests will be replaced every six months. Multimedia brochures which prepare the student for the test will be published. As the test result will be entered on a personal card and in a central file, the candidate can refer public or private institutions which recognise Aévèm to this information.

Impact
The setting up of Aévèm and other automated evaluation systems in general should facilitate active skill-learning in Europe since such systems surpass current evaluation methods, which are validated in their country of origin. This tool will enable a whole range of people with socio-economic difficulties to participate in a step-by-step learning system on a limited-objective basis.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
