Objective
The social and occupational integration of young people with autism can only be achieved if they are able to exercise their right to initial and continuing training, the right to express themselves and the right to be treated as individuals - rights which they are often refused. The aim of this project is to eliminate the unjust alienation of autistic people by dispensing with the carer-patient relationship through creating a group of "self-advocates" and developing therapeutic training activities aimed at bringing young autistic people from a protected work environment into an open one. Following an analysis of the training skills and needs of instructors and autistic people, the project will develop training programmes aimed at the requirements of private, public and social enterprises.
The aim of instructor-training is to create awareness among educators of the importance of knowing autistic people as individuals. In-company training courses will facilitate analysis of the needs and requirements of companies to enable training to be adapted accordingly. Before the start of the occupational integration phase for the autistic people concerned, in-company tutors will attend a training course to enable them to deal with the situation adequately. The completion of this phase could, with the assistance of instructors, lead to a number of people with autism setting up private enterprises.
Impact
Training for a target group largely excluded from vocational training schemes, i.e. young autistic people. It is intended for these young people to become better integrated as a result of enhanced training of instructors and tutors.
